Its developers described it as the eye opener for the beginning of a modernized video gaming area,  rating it as the fourth in the best video games ever produced.

This game is succeeded by two sequels which were produced with different markets in mind. The western sequel got some ideas from a unrelated game going by the tittle Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic while the Japanese sequel maintained to theme of the original game. Both sequels ended up with the same title. This lead to the re-release of the games in different areas and this time using distinctive titles.  Both the sequels inspired various products from different media like a television series aired in America at around 1989 and another live film action done at around 1993.  Many people enjoy to play super mario bros games, but this has not spared this game criticism and even suing. There was a case in the United States Supreme court that cited that just like the Road runner and Mighty Mouse cartoons, this game had some violent themes that had very small negative reaction from the general public.
